Best Coastal Walks in Malta: Choose a Route That Suits Your Day

The best coastal walk in Malta is the one that matches your time, mobility and the weather. A waterfront stroll and an exposed headland hike should not be described as the same experience. Start with the setting you want, then check terrain and access rather than choosing from distance alone.

Munxar offers coastal scenery beyond the town waterfront.

For a relaxed town walk: Marsaskala waterfront

Begin around Marsaskala’s main bay if you want sea views with places to pause nearby. You can make a short out-and-back walk rather than committing to a fixed circuit. This suits a day when a coffee, a meal and the view matter more than covering ground.

Check current works and diversions, particularly if you need a step-free route. “Promenade” does not guarantee that every connecting section around a town is equally accessible. Choose a turnaround point that keeps the return comfortable for everyone in your group.

For natural coastal scenery: St Thomas Bay and Munxar

Use St Thomas Bay as the starting point for a more outdoors-focused outing. The coast around Munxar offers a different landscape from the built-up waterfront. Treat exposed paths and limestone edges with care; keep back from drops and avoid walking on an edge to frame a photograph.

Wear shoes with grip, carry water and set a return time. In hot weather, shorten the walk and avoid the hottest part of the day. If the ground is wet, the wind is strong or the route feels uncertain, turn back rather than following an unmarked shortcut.

For a longer south-east walk: research the Tas-Silġ route

VisitMalta includes the Tas-Silġ Walk among its published Malta walking options, linking the Marsaskala and Marsaxlokk areas. Use the official route material to plan this as a proper outing. It should not be presented as a short extension that every beach visitor can casually add.

Check the current route, any access changes, your daylight window and transport from the end. An old route description is helpful background, not proof that every section remains open. Download your route before leaving and carry enough phone battery for navigation and the journey home.

Other Malta walks to compare

If you want to explore beyond the south-east, VisitMalta’s walking collection also lists Dingli, Fawwara and Wied iż-Żurrieq, Baħrija and the Watch Towers Walk. Compare the official route information rather than assuming the same terrain or duration. A route that works well on a cool spring day may be an uncomfortable choice in summer heat.
